Samah Ahmed

Although inspired by the ocean, her work is often more than just the representative nature of the ocean.

Samah Ahmed (b. 1968) is an artist, trained in painting from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, and resides both in the Maldives and the UK. She has exhibited and has been represented nationally and internationally including at the Commonwealth House (London), Affordable Art Fair (Singapore, London and New York), Male’ Art Gallery and the Maldives National Gallery.

An avid swimmer - with a deep love for nature and the ocean, Samah’s ultimate muse is unmistakably seen through her calling card - the use of three varying tones of unmixed blues. She has been creating works exclusively using the colour blue for the last 23 years.

Samah works rapidly, using metal tools to move paint across canvases, freely exploring colour and building uncomplicated layers that leave loose yet decisive marks. Although inspired by the ocean, her work is often more than just the representative nature of the ocean. Rather, she seeks to produce works that embed thoughts and feelings - the calm, the disconnect, the silence and the solitude she finds in the sea.
