There is infinite beauty in the mundane. I am fascinated by people, by the seemingly ordinary faces lost among the crowd, and have been drawn to them ever since I first began my journey as an artist. Each of my portraits is a detailed study of the human condition, of the marrow of my subject’s psyche, and of the dynamics of personality contained within the painted surface.
My work is somewhat inspired by impressionism, though it is much more deliberately and realistically composed. While I have dabbled with other media over the years, I currently consider pencil and watercolour to be my primary mediums. To capture the nuances in emotion of those whom I portray, I use free strokes and glaze colours to bring them alive on the paper, making use of light and shade to reveal the subtleties of their nature. The candid interaction between me and my subject can almost be seen as an intimate conversation, exploring deeply personal elements and details that constitute the whole.
With my portraits, I aim to act as an honest intermediary between the subject and the viewer. In the layers of skin, in the creases of flesh, my intention is to preserve the essence of human expression in its most bona fide form. My hope is that my audience sees and interprets my paintings with empathy and introspection, experiencing life, spirit, and sentiment through their own momentary, mortal gaze.
