It’s difficult to talk about my work. For the past 20 years I’ve only used blue for my paintings. Our little islands are surrounded by this vast blue and to be honest, nothing else could inspire me more. About a decade ago, there was real anxiety associated with global warming and the consequences for our little low lying nation. I think it was felt by most, whether consciously or subconsciously, that we may not exist in a couple of centuries time. I think the absence of any living being in my blue paintings has been a slight reference to that. I’ve taken long breaks from painting but have periodically returned to the Blue series.
The current series of paintings were begun in 2020 just after the pandemic started. I think with all the restrictions going around our lives, I found the process of painting this current series the most free it’s ever been with a shift to a more abstract style. I’m not sure if the focus of the series is any more or any less related to the sea. Maybe so much has changed for a lot of us in the past couple of years that it frankly doesn’t matter any more. I’m not attempting to tell a story nor send a message etc. They’re just purely pieces of artwork for the viewer to experience in their own way.
